The BMI by age

The optimal BMI depends on additional factors such as age. A slight increase in body fat is absolutely normal with age. Calculate BMI: How dangerous is a high BMI?

High weight alone does not necessarily mean that there is a risk to your health. The BMI also gives only a rough indication, but with a BMI of 30 and above, the risk of health consequences is generally considered elevated.

The BMI calculator can deliver wrong values ​​for very tall and very small people. Likewise with very muscular people – because muscle mass is heavy, it weighs more than fat. Accordingly, for example, athletes have a high BMI – but are fit, pay attention to a healthy diet and often even have their ideal weight. Therefore, the body mass index should always be considered together with the waist circumference.

The waist circumference of the BMI formula

Health risky is namely in every gender, the fat in and on the stomach. The risk is increased if the waist circumference is over 88 centimeters for women, and for men over 102 centimeters. The problem: Excessive kilos in the middle of the body affect the metabolism negatively. The consequences are, for example, higher blood sugar levels and higher blood pressure.

In order to better assess whether you are underweight, normal weight or overweight, in addition to the BMI calculator occasionally also the formula WHtR (waist-to-height ratio) is used. The BMI as hype?

Originally, the BMI calculator was not intended to provide ideal body weight values. The inventor of the BMI, Iganz Kaup, actually used the table for research in social statistics. And even the predecessor of the system, the so-called quetelet index after Adolphe Quetelet should only provide statistical measures for the relation between weight and size. It was never a question of whether someone can use it to calculate his BMI and find out whether he has normal weight, underweight, obesity or even obesity.

Accordingly, you should not immediately put on a diet, if your value at the BMI calculator does not meet your ideals or slightly deviates from the predetermined normal range.
