Many women who want to have children want to know as soon as possible if they are pregnant. Preferably even before the absence of the period. An early pregnancy test makes it possible.
If you are planning to have a baby and would like to get pregnant as soon as possible, you hope with each cycle: Did it work this time? Or maybe you have an artificial insemination behind you and now hang excitedly in the waiting loop ? Especially the impatient rely on early pregnancy tests, which can predict a pregnancy already five days before the absence of the period. How exactly these tests work and how safe they are can be found out here.
Early pregnancy test or pregnancy test: what’s the difference?
An early pregnancy test measures just as the conventional pregnancy test the hormone HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is formed exclusively during pregnancy, in the urine. The difference between the two tests lies only in the sensitivity of the measurement.
An early test reacts to even the smallest amounts of HCG – so this test can be used earlier than a classic pregnancy test. The amount of hCG in the body doubles approximately every 2 to 3 days and reaches its peak in the 12th week of pregnancy.
Are there different early pregnancy tests?
In pharmacies and drugstores, there is a wide range of pregnancy tests, which differ not only in the price of each other. The big difference is much more in the sensitivity. So if you want to be as sure as possible if you are pregnant or not, you should be aware of high sensitivity when purchasing an early pregnancy test.
You can tell by the lowest number of mlU / ml on the pack. Some early tests react at a concentration of 10 mIU / ml (milli International Units per milliliter) of urinary HCG – so they are very sensitive – others show pregnancy only at an HCG level of 20 mIU / ml. In contrast, classical pregnancy tests only react at an HCG value of 25 mIU / ml.
How reliable is an early pregnancy test?
Early pregnancy tests should always be used with caution. Not infrequently, it happens that the result is false negative 5 days before the period – so the test is negative despite pregnancy. The reason: The amount of HCG in the urine is not yet sufficient or the test is not sensitive enough to measure this low concentration.
But: If the early pregnancy test is positive, you can actually expect a pregnancy.
Another reason: the likelihood of complications is greatest during the implantation period. Not infrequently, the ovum can not implant despite fertilization and goes off with the menstruation again. That’s why most women do not realize that they were pregnant. Especially on a psychological-emotional level, it is therefore sometimes better to wait for the time being for the period and to pay attention to other signs of pregnancy.
When can an early pregnancy test be made?
Of course, a pregnancy test is useful only if the hormone HCG could ever be produced by the embryo. What’s going on in your body by then?
- Ovulation and successful fertilization move the ovum towards the uterus.
- The zygote-ripened embryo settles in the uterus after about a week.
- After two more days, the embryo begins to form HCG.
- He stimulates the corpus luteum, which then produces progesterone and estrogen.
- This, in turn, signals to the uterine lining that it is needed.
- The menstrual bleeding is prevented, the embryo continues to develop.
- Once HCG production has started, the value is doubled every two days. Ten days after fertilization, the average is 2 mlU / ml.
- In the 12th week of pregnancy, the maximum is reached.
This means that if you want to do an early test, you should not test before the 10th day after fertilization. But keep in mind: Every woman is different and the day of fertilization is not always exactly determinable. Therefore, you are on the safer side if you wait another day or two longer – even if it is difficult for you.
Early pregnancy test – yes or no?
For couples with long-term desire for children, especially the time to the period in each cycle is a pain. An early pregnancy test shortens the waiting time.
If he is positive, you are definitely pregnant at this time. If the early test is negative, you should definitely repeat it after a few days.
A false-negative result can be quite annoying – especially if it was not the first time. Therefore, first of all, think about whether you would like to wait two or three days before you start the morning’s test. In addition, you may be saving yourself from having a very early departure, which is often hard for many women to handle.
An early pregnancy test in artificial insemination
To stimulate the maturation of oocytes are often administered drugs containing HCG. Unfortunately, a pregnancy test can not prove any pregnancy, because it would react to the HCG in your urine in any case – a false positive result is thus already programmed. Therefore, an artificial insemination 14 days after the onset of the oocytes will initiate a blood test that confirms that you are pregnant or unfortunately it did not work out.
How do you use an early pregnancy test?
The procedure is very simple and does not differ in the application of a classic pregnancy test:
- Simply hold test strips or the digital test sensor tip in your urine stream.
- Then you then put it on a flat surface.
- Alternatively, you can catch the urine in a clean cup and dip the test with the tip.
- After a short wait, you know if you are pregnant.
IMPORTANT: Please read the leaflet carefully before the evaluation. There you will also find information on the waiting times and the application, which may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
TIP: Use best morning urine. This is the highest HCG concentration.
