Parmesan in pregnancy: Allowed?

Can the Parmesan cheese be eaten without any worries during pregnancy? We clarify if eating can be dangerous for both mother and baby.

When a woman becomes pregnant, a healthy diet and food safety are particularly important. Among the common cheeses, Parmesan cheese is the most frequently questioned cheese when it comes to abstaining from pregnancy.

Cheese is important in pregnancy
Cheese is one of the foods you should look closely to when pregnant. But a balanced diet is even more important in pregnancy: Pregnant women should, therefore, abstain from eating cheese because it contains important proteins, trace elements, vitamins, and minerals.

These nutrients are especially important for expectant mothers and the unborn baby. They need pregnant women in larger quantities so that the baby can develop well.

Pregnant women should rather do without these cheeses:

  • Raw milk products (raw milk cheese) and
  • fresh cheese offered in the bar as well
  • White mold and blue cheese

So you are sure not to eat cheese contaminated with listeria or bacteria! Because the embryo does not have enough defenses against infection.

Soft cheese like Camembert may be eaten as Backcamembert because temperatures above 70 ° kill the Listeria.

Parmesan in pregnancy: Dangerous or not?
Although the Italian hard cheese is often made from raw milk, it was slightly heated and the long maturation period and storage of Parmesan (12 to 72 months) ensure that the food hardly contains the dangerous Listeria or bacteria for pregnant women.

However, the bark of Parmesan should be removed generously during pregnancy. This is healthier for mother and baby. Parmesan may also be eaten during breastfeeding. If the hard cheese is heated, the parmesan is very safe.

Which cheese is made from raw milk?
Certain cheeses must be made with raw milk. For others, it is a matter of taste.

  • Emmental AOC
  • Allgäu Emmentaler PDO
  • Emmental de Savoie AOP
  • Cantal

  • Laguiole
  • Comté
  • Gruyére

Good to know: raw milk cheese always bears the reference “made with raw milk”.

Listeria in pregnancy
Infection with Listeria is rare in pregnant women. Overall, listeriosis is a rare infectious disease. But if a pregnant woman gets infected, it can be fatal to the fetus. However, there are only 3 cases of illness on 80,000 pregnancies. Contagion occurs mainly through the consumption of contaminated food of animal or plant origin. Or through contact with animals.
